Good morning, Talawanda! Today is Monday October 15th, 2018

Congratulations to the Talawanda FFA Chapter on their great finishes on Saturday at the State Land Evaluation Competition.  The Rural Team, led by Austin Weekley who finished 8th high individual in the contest, scored 2,527 points, and were only 87 points away from qualifying for Nationals.  The Urban team, led by Joseph Copeland and Dakota Kiefer who finished 12th and 20th high individuals respectively, scored 2,598 points and were only 62 points away from qualifying for Nationals Great season to all the soils judgers.  Go aggies!

Members of Girls Who Code, our next meeting will be this Wednesday, October 17th, right after school in room 220.  The meeting will last until 2:45 and there will be snacks!

The Braves Cross Country team had an outstanding day Saturday at the SWOC Championship here at home. The girls won the conference championship, with 5 individual top 10 finishes from Maddy Iden, Libby Farmer, Hannah Lippincott, and Zoe Moore. Congratulations to Iden, who was named league runner of the year. The BOYS team was league runner up, with 3 top 10 finishes from David Kraushar, Kiefer Bell and Logan Murray, and Kraushar was also named runner of the year for the boys.  In addition, head coach Paul Stiver was named Conference Coach of the Year for both the boys and girls teams. So next up, the cross country team goes to the district meet on Saturday in Cedarville. 

The football team fell Friday on Senior night by a score of 54-0 to Edgewood. Tyler Teeters went 7-26 passing for 39 yards. Terrell Wills rushed for 42 and Tyler Englehard had 3 receptions for 16 yards. The Braves fall to  2-6 overall, and 0-4 in the SWOC. They will travel to Northwest next week.

The JV Football team came from behind though to beat the Cougars by a score of 26-22 on Saturday after trailing to Edgewood 22-6 earlier in the game. Deondre Bothast-Revalee scored 4 touchdowns for the Braves in that game, so congratulations to the JV football team on a great come-from-behind win.

On Thursday, the volleyball team fell in straight sets to Ross on their senior night. They finish the regular season with a 7-14 overall record and 5-7 conference record. The Volleyball team will take on Colerain in the postseason on Wednesday at 6 — we’ll get you ready for that later in the week.

And the boys soccer team on Thursday finished their conference regular season undefeated with a 3-1 victory at Ross. The Braves end conference play with a 12-0-0 SWOC record. They had just two losses in the regular season. So the boys soccer team will host a 1st round playoff game on Thursday here at the field between either Kings or Oak Hills at 7 — we’ll give you more details later in the week, but just a heads up.

And the girls soccer team tied with Ross 2-2 on Thursday to end their regular season with an all time high in wins — their overall record finishes at 11-3-2. They will play Princeton in postseason action tomorrow.

The field hockey team fell 9-0 in their senior night game against Fairmont at the field yesterday. It ends the regular season for the Braves who are off to the playoffs now, so we wish them good luck. 

Home games for today: 2 Senior nights are on tap in both Girls Soccer and Girls Volleyball. Girls Soccer hosts Ross with the Varsity kick at 7, and Volleyball has the Rams as well. Freshman at 4:30, JV at 5:45, and Varsity at 7.  So be at the games tonight!

And since tomorrow is Friday, we’ll get you ready for tomorrow’s football senior night against Edgewood. The Cougars have a 5-2 overall record and are 2-1 in the SWOC. Edgewood is coming off a 21-7 loss at Winton Woods last week. They’ve lost 2 straight games, including a 10-6 loss at Ross in week 6. Senior introductions from all the sports teams will start at 6:30 tomorrow night with the kick at 7 for the final home game of the year. It will be a pink out for breast cancer awareness.

[Fist pumping] The Red Sox pulled it off last night against the Yankees to advance past the ALDS in 4 games. It was a pretty wild one last night with Boston able to pull out the 1 run win. So the League Championship series are set in the MLB Postseason. It’s the Brewers and LA Dodgers squaring off in the NLCS and the Red Sox and Astros in the ALCS. The begin Friday.

Well the boys soccer team has set a few records this year, and it was the girl’s turn last night. The Lady Braves beat Northwest at the field by a score of 4-1 to set their all-time program wins record at 11. They’re record improves to 11-3-1 on the season. They’ll play Ross at home on Thursday in their final regular season game. 

The Boys Soccer team also picked up a win over Northwest last night. Quinn Flaspohler scored 2 goals. Sam Robinson, Max Farrell, and Nathan Vidourek also found the net in the Braves’ 5-0 win. Talawanda’s record improves to 13-2 overall, and they remain undefeated in the SWOC with one conference game to go at Ross on Thursday.

The Volleyball team also collected a win last night over Northwest in straight sets. Their record improves to 7-13 overall and 5-6 in the conference. Their senior night is Thursday against Ross in the gym. 

Home games for today: Girls JV and Varsity Field Hockey take on Fairmont. JV at 5 and Varsity at 6:30.

Purdue University is offering a program called Seniors Exploring Engineering on Monday, October 15th.  The program is geared towards young women in their senior year who are trying to determine if engineering at Purdue University is a good fit for them.  Students will explore their choice of two engineering disciplines, obtain knowledge regarding the first-year engineering program, admissions, student life, and engineering in the “real world.”  Campus tours are offered with an opportunity to meet with Purdue professors, current engineering students, and some awesome women alumni.  You should register early at www.purdue.edu/WIEP

Saturday the cross country team ran the hot and humid course at Fort St/ Clair State Park in Eaton.  The girls earned second place, with the top place earned by Maddy Iden, who ran a new personal record of 19:37.  Also running a PR was Alma Petersen.  The boys earned 5th place, with the top place earned by Kiefer Bell.  Also running a PR was Josh Curry.  This week the team will prepare for our SWOC meet, to be held here at home on Saturday, October 13th.  Please plan to come on Saturday morning and support the Braves.

The football team fell to Mt. Healthy on Friday by a score of 56-21.  Tyler Teeters went 15/34 with 185 passing yards and 1 touchdown. Terrell Wills rushed for 63 yards and Kyle Campbell had 119 rec yards.  The Braves fall to 2-5 overall, 0-3 in the SWOC — and their next matchup is with Edgewood at home for senior night this Friday.   

The boys soccer team fell 2-1 on their senior night Saturday afternoon to Kings. Their record falls to 12-2-0 overall. The Braves will finish out the regular season this week with road games on Tuesday and Thursday against Northwest and Ross. 

The pre-season swim and dive meeting will be this Tuesday, October 9th at 6:30 PM in the Performing Arts Center.  If you are interested in swimming or diving for the Braves this upcoming winter please come to this meeting to meet the coaches of the team, obtain practices and meet schedules, and learn what the expectations are to being a part of the team that has won 12 consecutive league championships.  If you cannot make it to this meeting please see Coach Pasquale in Rm 418 or send him an email at pasquales@talawanda.org.

Fan appreciation night last night at the field was a big success with the Braves boys soccer team pulling through on a 4-1 win over Edgewood. Sam Robinson, Tristan Fontaine, Jake Kelly, and Max Farrell put points on the board for Talawanda. Tom Winkler had 6 saves in the win. Their overall record is 12-1-0, and the champion Braves improve to 10-0-0 in the SWOC.

The girls volleyball team beat Edgewood on the road last night in 5 sets in a quality conference win. The Braves record overall improves to 6-12, they are now 4-6 in the conference. 

And the girls soccer team also gathered a win as well with their 1-nill victory on the road at Edgewood.  The Braves are now on a 4 game winning streak and are in 3rd place in the SWOC. Their conference record is 7-3-0.

Three-peat complete! The boys soccer team has won back-to-back-to-back SWOC championships for the first time in team history after an 8-1 rout of Mt. Healthy on the road. Sam Robinson and Ethan Kent each had 2 goals in the game. Ben Marks allowed just 1 goal in net and had 2 saves. The Braves have allowed just 5 goals against in the past 4 games. So congratulations to the boys soccer team!

Also, congratulations to Austin Goerss for making it into a five-way playoff at sectionals, hoping to grab one of two remaining spots for the district tournament.  Though he didn’t nail down a spot this year, there are high hopes for his chances next season!  Here he is on the first playoff hole, with his teammates behind him all the way. 

Home games for today: Boys JV and Varsity Soccer take on Edgewood. JV at 5 and Varsity at 7. Tonight is fan appreciation night at the field, and all students get in free with their student ID. Good morning, Talawanda! Today is Wednesday October 3rd, 2018

Yesterday, the Talawanda FFA Chapter competed in their first competitions of the year, and were very successful.  The Urban Land evaluation team finished 3rd in the contest of 13 teams. Joseph Copeland finished in 3rd, Matthew Butterfield 8th, Dakota Kiefer 10th, and Austin Lake in 11th out of 67 individuals, and will be our State Judgers.  Other judgers were Olivia Zaenkert in 19th, and Morgan Gillespie in 49th.  This will be the 9th year in a row that we qualified for State in Urban judging.  The Rural Land evaluation team finished in 4th place of 22 teams, with Dalton Schlichter 8th high individual, Austin Weekley 13th, Spencer Crauder 22nd, Kasey Condo 26th, Peyton Weekley 29th, and Hunter Brewer 39th.  All braves finished in the top 36% of the contest.  Good luck to these teams as they have now qualified for the state finals held next Saturday in Eastern Ohio. Go aggies!

Braves for the Cure shirts will be sold in room 611 or during lunch, the cost for the shirts is 12 dollars.  All profits are donated to the Side Out Foundation and Luna Cares.  THS Volleyball and FCCLA will be hosting the dig for the cure today against Badin. Please plan to attend!

Attention second-year members of NHS: we will meet in Ms. Alfonsi’s room after school on Tuesday, October 2 to finalize plans for our induction ceremony.

Attention Sophomores – PRIDE Day is coming up next week on Thursday for students A through J and Friday for students K through Z.  If you have any questions you can see Mrs. Peter in the Guidance office or Mr. Z in room 301.

And now for world news and Patty G with sports.

The comeback attempt for the Braves came up JUST short on Friday with a 43-35 loss to Harrison. The Braves trailed 43-7 at the beginning of the 4th quarter and scored 28 unanswered in the final frame.  Tyler Teeters went 11-20 passing for a season high 254 yards. Terrell Wills  rushed for 110, and Kyle Campbell had 101 rec yards.  The Braves defense had 4 sacks in the game. The Braves are now 2-4 overall, and 0-2 in the SWOC. The Braves will play at Mount Healthy on Friday. 

The cross country team raced this past Saturday at Kettering Fairmont.  Facing the toughest competition of the season, almost all athletes ran their best times.  The girls team placed 4th out of 16 teams.  Placing 6th overall was Maddy Iden.  Setting significant personal records for the season were:  Alyssa Chaney, Brooke Hubbard, Katie Keeler, Audrey Lorigan, Eva Motta, Alma Peterson, and Dominique Withrow-Ilbrahim.  They boys teams placed 12th out of 21 teams.  Placing 12th overall was David Kraushar.  Setting significant personal records for the boys were:  Kiefer Bell, Shae Dillingham, Jesse and John Faler, Ben Farmer, Logan Murray, Kye Tomoyasu, Greg Urayama, Owen West Poley, and Connor Woodin.  The next cross country meet will be Saturday, October 6th in Eaton.

The volleyball team fell to Eaton in straight sets on the road Saturday. Their record falls to 4-11 overall.  

Home games for today: Volleyball takes on Badin in the Gym for the Dig for the Cure game. Freshman at 4:30, JV at 5:45, and Varsity at 7. The Varsity game will be live streamed on Brave TV, Grady Holmes and I have the call at 7 on our YouTube channel.  Also want to pass good luck on to the girls tennis team who finishes their SWOC tournament tonight at 4 on the Miami Tennis courts next to Yager.
