Today we will highlight the Talawanda FFA’s primary source of charitable giving. They play FFA Basketball each February with monies raised to go toward Dayton Children’s Hospital. In 2018, FFA raised $1500 dollars, and in 2019, they’ve raised over $1000. The FFA’s tournament is this Saturday, Varsity has a 4-4 record, with JV at 6-2. The FFA also invites all faculty and staff for complimentary ice cream after school today and wants to remind student members there will be a cookout during lunch tomorrow.

Nothing to talk about in terms of results today, but we do wish the best of luck to the 7 swimmers and divers headed up the road to Canton later today to represent Talawanda at the State Championships. No other team in the SWOC has sent more people to the state meet in one season. They will be there through the weekend, so we wish best of luck to the relay team of Ben Crowder, Rhyan Meyers, Blake Madden, and John Anzano. Also best of luck to Mercy Patterson, Sean Mondello, and Sam Hool. The competition begins later today, so we’ll be anxious to hear how they do.

Congratulations to the Talawanda FFA on their many competitions recently: the Agricultural Communications team of Sophia Thompson, Grace Suit, Justin Beckner & Dalton Norris on receiving 12TH IN THE STATE, the Tractor Troubleshooting Team of Dakota Kiefer & Michael Schwab who placed 6th in the Districts, the Ag Sales team who also placed 6th in the District last week! Team included Grace Suit, Justin Beckner, Peyton Weekley & Layne Schwab, and finally Congratulations to our Public Speaking team of Lauren Butterfield (4th) Riley Murphy (4th) Justin Beckner (2nd) and Kasey Condo (2nd). Kasey and Justin have qualified for State competition next week. There are over 25 competitions that Talawanda FFA members compete in every year. Go Aggies!

Well as you just heard, the Southwest Ohio District Swimming Championships were held this weekend, where both the boys and girls teams represented Talawanda very well at the meet. Out of 44 teams, the boys finished 11th and out of 49 teams, the girls finished 20th The meets were highlighted by the 7th place finish of the boys 200 medley relay team of John Anzano, Blake Madden, Ben Crowder, and Ryan Meyers and the 9th place finish of Mercy Patterson in the 100 Back.  Both this relay and Mercy have qualified to swim at the Ohio High School State Championships this weekend in Canton, OH.  To qualify to this meet you must be one of the 24 fastest swimmers in your event so it is truly an accomplishment just qualifying.  The boy’s relay and Mercy will be joining Sam Hool at the state meet, who qualified last week in the 1 Meter Diving event.  Congratulations to the swim and dive teams for all their accomplishments this year and for sending SIX total kids to the state meet!

The hockey team fell to Thomas Worthington on Friday night at the Dublin Chiller by a score of 5-1. Sam Morrish had the goal for Talawanda in the game. So the hockey team’s season is over in the first round of the state playoffs, so we congratulate the hockey team and their seniors on a great season. 

The boy’s basketball team fell to Ross on Senior Night Friday by a score of 79-32. Senior David Kraushar led Talawanda with 9 points and John Richter had 6. Talawanda finishes off the regular season with a 1-21 overall record, they’ll play either Moeller or Middletown in the postseason next Tuesday. And a special congratulations to boys basketball seniors Tristan Fontaine, Ryan Henes, Tommy Winkler, David Kraushar, and John Beckett on playing in their final home game Friday.

The girl’s basketball team fell to Lakota West last night in their first-round playoff matchup by a score of 85-19. Sophie Pohlabel led the Brave in points with 12, Kyra Koontz and Jenna Tegge each added 3.  Talawanda will finish the season off at 2-21 overall and 1-11 in the conference. So we congratulate the Women’s Basketball team and their seniors on a successful season and acknowledge they have a bright future.   

For those interested in playing baseball this spring, there will be a parents’ meeting on February 14th at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria, immediately followed by our regular workout in the gym. at 6:30 PM in the cafeteria, immediately followed by their regular workout in the gym.

No home games for today, but tomorrow is the boy’s basketball senior night against Ross.  Freshman at 4:30, JV at 6, and Varsity at 7:30. Senior intros begin at 7:10. Their first game will be tomorrow night at the Dublin Chiller in the Columbus area against Thomas Worthington. Puck-drop is scheduled for 6:45.

The boys basketball team lost to Eaton last night by a score of 63-58. The Brave held the lead at some points in the second half. David Kraushar led Talawanda scorers with 19 point and Jonathan Richter had 15. Talawanda falls to 1-20 overall, their final regular season game will take place this Friday at the gym for senior night against Ross. 

This past weekend the swim teams took part in the sectional meets. The boys finished in a tie for 3rd place with Oak Hills, falling only to St. X and Elder. The girls finished in 4th plae falling only to St. Ursula, Seton, and Mercy McCauley. Notice that it was only private schools that finished ahead of Talawanda. The Brave recorded 43 season best times at the meet. Qualifying to this week’s district meet in individual events were Ben Crowder, John Anzano, and Mercy Patterson. The Brave also have 5 relays moving on to distrcits as well, where Blake Madden, Rhyan Meyeers, Maxx Gregg, James Anzano, Zeke Groom, Luke LIang, Lilia Hool, Kenna Mondello, Rory Adryan, and Hannah Lippincott all qualified as well. The district meet is this weekend at Miami, he boys swim Saturday morning and the Girls Saturday evening. And don’t forget swim and dive teams, please bring our warm up jackets with you to school tomorrow so you can have a team picture with the SWOC Champion Banners.

So last night, the Talawanda diving team’s District meet was held, and the Brave produced 2 state qualifiers. Sam Hool took home the old and Sean Mondello finished 4th/ Hool is the first Men’s Diving District winnner for Talawanda since the 1990’s/ The Divers will compete at State on February 23rd in Canton, Ohio — so congratulations to them. The girls will have their diving meet tonight at the Miami Rec Center.

No other home games are scheduled for today, but we do wish the Girls Basketball team best of luck as they travel to face off against Lakota West in a First Round playoff matchup at Lakota East High School. Tickets are $7 a piece at the door with the tip tonight at 7:30.

That was the scene in the gym Saturday after the girl’s basketball team pulled out a 1 point win over Ross on Senior Day by a 51-50 tally. Jazz Bennett was the points leader for Talawanda with 16 and Sophie Pohlabel had 15.  Seniors Jenna Tegge and Maria Richter also played great games. Talawanda will play Lakota West in the tournament on Wednesday at Lakota East High School — tickets for that game are on sale now in the athletic office.   

The hockey team played in their league tournament this weekend and came short of a win in the championship game. Saturday, the Brave beat Centerville by a 6-4 score, and yesterday, Talawanda fell to St. X by a 6-3 tally in the championship despite two goals from Josh Shrader and one from Grady Holmes. Talawanda finishes 2nd in the league, and they will begin district tournament play this Friday against Thomas-Worthington at the Dublin Chiller.

And a quick note about tonight’s events — the wrestling senior night that was supposed to take place in the gym was canceled for this evening— but the bowling team’s senior night will take place at Oxford Lanes this afternoon when they take on Middletown at 4.

The boys bowling team beat Cincinnati Christian last night by a score of 2617 to 2276.     Aiden Linksch led Talawanda with a series score of 450 followed by Jarrett White who bowled a 416 series. The girls bowling team fell to Cincinnati Christian 2121 to 1797.  Grace Steigerwald  had a 390 and Baylee Essert had a 282.  The bowling team’s senior night will be this Monday against Middletown at Oxford Lanes.

Earlier this week the Sectional Diving Tournaments were held. On Tuesday night, Sam Hool won the Cincinnati Sectional Diving meet while Sean Mondello placed second. Both advanced to the District Diving Tounament next week where Sam will be seeded first and Sean will be seeded third. On Wednesday night, the girls Sectional Diving tournaments were held. Olivia Baker placed third and Addie Lehman placed fifth. Olivia had a career best performance to close out her career on the diving board, but just narrowly missed advancing to districts. Tonight, the boys swim team will compete at their Sectional Swim Meet, while tomorrow the girls swim team will compete at their Sectional Swim Meet. Best of luck to both teams as they look to make a strong showing in this year’s state tournament.

Home games for this weekend: The boys basketball team hosts Northwest tonight: Freshman at 4:30, JV at 6, and Varsity at 7:30. That game will be livestreamed on Channel 85. Also, tomorrow afternoon is the girls basketball senior night against Ross. JV at 1 and Varsity at 2:30 in the gym tomorrow, and that game will be livestreamed on Channel 85 as well.

And we wish best of luck to the hockey team who plays Alter tomorrow at 7pm up at South Metro Sports in game 1 of their postseason tournament.   If they win that, they’ll play the winner of St. X and Beavercreek at 3:30 Sunday at South Metro.

The deadline for applying to Honors, AP, and other classes requiring an application has been extended to the end of the day tomorrow.

The FCCLA Chapter is selling Valograms for $4 to benefit service projects in the community, the items can be purchased at lunch, and will be delivered on February 14th!

Any senior who is interested in the Ohio Operating Engineer Apprenticeship program should pick up an application packet from their school counselor. Applications are being accepted February 7-9. Apprentices in this program earn $18 an hour in their first year and will earn $29 an hour by year four. Again, for more information about this or other apprenticeship programs, please see your counselor. 

Any junior or senior who would like to attend Butler Tech’s apprenticeship day on February 10th, please see Mr. Phelps in room 518 for more information. This field trip will allow you to listen to a panel discussion and have conversations with electricians, sheet metal workers, construction laborers, and many other professions.

Seniors- The Talawanda Local Scholarship and The Oxford Community Scholarship Books are both now available. They have been sent to your school email, posted on our website and are also available in the guidance office. Transcripts for these scholarships do not need to be official so you will be given one copy of your transcript and you can duplicate as needed. All applications are due back to guidance Wednesday, February 20th by the end of school. The Oxford Community Foundation and the Talawanda local have different requirements so please read directions carefully. See Mrs.Roy in the guidance office with any questions.

Well, Talawanda, we may have forgotten about the horrible tragedy that took place here last week. We’re speaking of Patty G’s kidnapping. And now for the dramatic conclusion.

Well I don’t remember much from the past week, but I am glad there was an old TV in that storage closet so I could watch the game on it yesterday — we’ll have more on that in a moment with NFL Analyst Ben Eisenbraun.

So we saw one dynasty win last night, but the dynasty that is Talawanda Swimming and Diving added a new entry into their history books Saturday night. Both the boys and girls swim and dive teams captured their 13th straight league championship Saturday night. The SWOC has been in existence for seven years, and Talawanda has been the only team to ever win a swim and dive championship. That’s called domination folks. 18 of 24 events at the meet were won by Talawanda swimmers or divers. Mercy Patterson and Ben Crowder headlined the meet by both winning two events and each was named SWOC Athlete of the Year. The team also set five conference records at the meet — two by Mercy, one by Ben, one by Sam Hool in diving, and one by the 200 Free Relay team of Ben Crowder, Blake Madden, John Anzano, and Rhyan Meyers. Other individual event winners were Hannah Lippincott, Addie Lehman, Kenna Mondello, Rhyan Meyers, Maxx Gregg, John Anznao, and Blake Madden. Next up is the state tournament. The Sectional Swim meets are this weekend where the Brave will look to qualify many to the District Meet.

The boy’s basketball team went 0-2 this weekend with a 76-41 loss to Mt. Healthy on Friday and a 77-57 drop to Colerain Saturday. Their record falls to 1-17 overall and 0-9 in the SWOC.

The girl’s basketball team lost to Edgewood by a 54-38 tally on Saturday. Their record is 1-18 overall and 0-10 in the SWOC. They actually picked up their first win at Eaton last Tuesday, so congratulations to them.

Attention NHS members: We will meet after school on Thursday, January 31 above the media center. We’ll take our club yearbook photo and begin planning our charity volleyball tournament

Oxford Parks and Recreation will be visiting Lunch Today to pass out information on summer jobs. There will be info on lifeguarding, camp leaders, and front gate/concession stand workers. They will be available to answer any questions and have applications for anyone who wants to apply.

Diversity club invites everyone to attend the anti-Islamophobia workshop in the media center today after school. It will be led by guest speaker Melina Gonzalez, who will share with us her experience of working with Syrian refugees in Germany. Come to learn about how we can be better neighbors and friends to Muslim Americans.

We at the THS Daily News had one of our own kidnapped yesterday.  As you can imagine, this has us all distraught and worried for Patty G’s safety.  Our news crew and Mr. Z decided to investigate the disappearance…

The Girls basketball game scheduled for Wednesday at home was moved to today at Eaton due to frigid cold temperatures tomorrow. We wish the girl’s basketball team luck as they travel to face Eaton tonight.

There is a boys tennis meeting Thursday in Mr. Thomas’ room right after school for any boys wishing to play tennis this spring
