Today is the kick off day of National FCCLA week!  What does FCCLA stand for?  Family, Career and Community Members of America which was founded in 1945.  The THS chapter has 221 members.  Today FCS and FFA members are hearing a speaker from SADD about impaired driving as part of the National program FACTS.  Remember tomorrow as part of FCCLA Spirit week it is Celebrity Couple.

Attention all staff members – NHS is partnering with the Perfect Blend and the staff sunshine committee tomorrow to provide free donuts and drinks to all faculty and staff at THS.  Stop by between 1st and 3rd period to pick up your treat!  Staff should check their email for more information and to order!

Best Buddies February meeting will be held on Thursday, February 16 until 3:30pm. We will celebrate Valentine’s Day with lots of red and pink themed snacks and games! We will also talk about our upcoming Best Buddies Sock Hop!

The Spirit Store will be open on Friday during lunch and Thursday before and after the Pep Rally.  If you need merch, stop by and check out the sweatshirts, t-shirts and hats.  Money goes to support Best Buddies.

Project Green Club will meet in Mrs. Ruther’s room on Tuesday after school. All are welcome!

Fermata Nowhere is Talawanda’s a capella choral group.  Julio Fuentes interviewed Mr. Pearson and Anna Reiff about all the cools things the group gets to do.

Boys Basketball took home their share of the SWOC championship with a win Friday when they defeated Ross 68-50. The boys won again the next day at home against Loveland and they finished the regular season 15-7. They’ll play Hamilton in the first round Thursday.

Girls basketball handled Turpin 61-40 to win their first playoff game in 9 years. They’ll take on Milford in round 2, Thursday.

The Eastern Indoors took place over the weekend, the meet was highlighted by Logan Howard, Max Bixler, Henry Hoblitzell, and Haley O’Brien. They all have their sights on States.

The swim & dive teams had their sectional swim meets this weekend.   Adam Hunt, Stephen Mullally, Noah Femiani, and Jonah Femiani teamed up two different times to qualify both their 200 Medley and 200 Free Relays.  Noah and Stephen also qualified individually. The boys team finished in 5th. For the girls Anna Gregg, Abbie Curry, Kaylyn Macechko, and Maren Patterson broke the school record in the 200 Medley Relay and qualified for the district meet.  The 200 Free Relay team of Kaylyn, Ellie Killy, Anna, and Abbie also qualified for districts and so did the 400 Free Relay team of Ellie, Anna Abbitt, Lindsay Offenburger, and Maren.  Individually, Maren, Abbie, Anna, and Kaylyn all qualified.  As a team the girls finished 2nd.  The district swim meet will be on Saturday where berths to the state championships will be on the line.

Evan Messner did some research on our current school funding situation, and decided to turn in this report.

The diving sectionals wrapped up yesterday, Julio Fuentes will be representing Talawanda at the district meet next week. And swimming sectionals get underway today, good luck to all of our swimmers.

 

Huge game tonight for boys basketball with the league title on the line,  yesterday Shifty interviewed some players ahead of the year’s biggest tilt.

 

The theme is a blackout, make sure to head to Ross to support the boys.

 

The playoffs are kicking off for girls basketball tomorrow when they head to Lakota East to play Turpin, they lost in the first round last year, but this go around is all business.

Last night the wrestling team traveled to Anderson for a Tri-match against Anderson and New Richmond.  Talawanda was defeated by Anderson but wins were recorded by Gavin Boner, Sammy Dillon, Will Tanner, and Clayton Bennett. The Brave proved to be victorious against the New Richmond Lions, with a final score of 39 to 36.  Gavin Boner, Ryan Garver, Sammy Dillon, Will Tanner, Jackson O’Brien, Caleb Dilhoff, and Tristan Tincher all recorded wins for the Brave; Tristan’s win by pin sealed the DUB for the team.  Tonight the team is back in action at Hamilton where they will take on Big Blue and the Badin Rams.

Julio Fuentes placed 6th and Josh Graham placed 8th at the Cincinnati sectional diving meet last night.  Both boys qualified for the district diving meet which will take place next week at Miami.  Tonight the girls will have their sectional diving meet.  Looking to qualify to districts will be Anna Abbitt, Reagan Slager, and Eliza Sullivan.

Boys basketball lost to West Clermont in overtime 66-63, the team falls to 13-7 and will turn their focus on the biggest game of the season Friday at Ross.

The final AP poll for girls basketball came out yesterday, the girls finished 4th in the state, but are somehow seeded 6th in the sectional bracket, the script in on fire. We’ll catch this weekends scores after Dawson interviews some of the players.
The Basketball teams swept the three game weekend, the boys won two against Northwest and Reading and are now tied for first in the SWOC when Ross lost to Harrison. They head to Ross Friday with the SWOC championship on the line.
Taking the third game, Girls basketball defeated McNicholas 83-58 to cap off their perfect regular season, finishing 21-0. Kylee Fears led the way with a 33 point triple double. But we all know, what’s there to be happy about, jobs not finished.

A big SWOC match tonight for Boys Basketball against first place Northwest, the theme is a beach out, the game will be streamed live here on Channel 85 if you can’t make it.

Saturday is a big day at the THS Gym, Girls basketball plays their final home game this season as they look to finish a perfect 21-0, tip off against McNicholas at 1:30.

Later on tomorrow night, Boys Basketball is also at home when they host Reading. Make sure to pack the gym tomorrow, and if you can’t show up, both games will be streamed here on Channel 85.

Girls basketball defeated Ross last night in a close one 45-42, the girls finish SWOC play undefeated at 10-0 and are 20-0 overall. They play Saturday at home in the season finale at 1:30.

Also beating Ross and being 10-0 in the SWOC is Academic Challenge, Academic Handled the Rams easily and head to Mt. Healthy next Wednesday.

No home games today but Bowling is on the road when they head to Ross for a 4 o’clock match.

Girls Basketball heads to Ross tonight for the SWOC finale, the girls are trying to be the first team to go undefeated in 10+ SWOC matches since Talawanda did it in back to back years in 2013 and 2014, tip off at 7:30.

Girls basketball took out Taylor 59-38 keeping them a perfect 19-0, Taylor Farris led the way with a 25 point double double, her second of the season. The girls have two games left in the regular season, they’ll head to Ross tomorrow.
Bowling matched against Harrison, the girls fell but the boys won 2276 to 2205, Derek Hacker led the way and bowled a 182 average.

Congratulations to Talawanda Mock Trial.  Both THS teams qualified for regionals by winning both of their trials at Districts last Friday. Talawanda Team 1 members Jared Sims and Shr-Lin Moore won Outstanding Witness Awards. Talawanda Team 2 members swept their awards with Eliza Sullivan and Muhammed Khan receiving Outstanding Attorney awards and  Shr-Shiang Moore and Kate Bolenbaugh winning outstanding attorney awards. The teams will compete next on Feb. 17.

 

Now for Zander with Moore sports.

Boys Basketball took two wins over the weekend, 73-63 over Mt. Healthy, and a 48-46 win over Franklin County which was highlighted by a Cale Leitch game winner at the buzzer. The boys are 11-6 overall and still sit only one game out of first in the SWOC.

Onto the girls who continued their winning ways also defeating Franklin County, 78-51 was the final. Kylee Fears led with a monster 26 point 16 rebound performance, Taylor Farris put up 20 points of her own in the girls 18th straight win. The girls will be back in action tonight at Taylor.

The girls swim & dive team captured their second straight SWOC title this past weekend, leading the way for the girls was Maren Patterson as she won both the 100 Free and 100 Back.  In both of these events Maren broke the league record and she took home the SWOC Athlete of the Year for swimming & diving for the third time in her career.  Also swimming well for the girls was Abbie Curry, who won both the 50 Free and 100 Breast.

 

The boys finished second at the SWOC championships, they held their own despite being Coach Pasquale’s smallest boys team he’s ever, Stephen Mullaly and Noah Femiani finished 2nd in their respective events, and the Swim and Dive teams will now focus their attention to the State Tournament next week.

 

Wrestling was at the Eaton Invite, Gavin Boner placed first at 113 and Sammy Dillon finished 2nd in 150. Wrestling will have a Try match next Wednesday.
