Good Morning Talawanda. Today is Thursday, March 5th, 2020.

A Jostens representative will be here on Monday, the 9th, during lunch, to hand out Graduation Announcement orders.

The talent show this year will be Friday March 20th, if you are interested in showcasing your talent please pick up a form in the office or outside room 611.  You may turn them in to Mrs. Gregory or any of the co-chairs listed on the form.   This is a great way to showcase your talent and help others, as all the money will be donated to local charities.

Congratulations to Lucy Wang, Piper Muhlhauser, Heather Kuckuck, Hunter Hoefker, and Justin Beckner. These five competed yesterday in the Rotary 4-Way Test speech competition. Students had to deliver a memorized, 4 to 6 minute speech to the Rotary Club members. Justin Beckner won the competition with his speech on food waste and will compete at the district level later this month. Congratulate all five students for the hard work and amazing speeches! 

Best Buddies’ Week of Inclusion concludes tomorrow with a school spirit/Best Buddies spirit day. Wear your favorite Talawanda Spirit wear or Best Buddies shirt to support inclusion. Also, don’t forget, Friday night is the spring social from 6:30-8:30pm in the gym.

Students: Don’t forget to sign the banner for Spread the Word Day in the cafeteria today during lunch. Spread the Word: Inclusion encourages people to pledge to end the use of the R-word. Each pledge is a personal commitment to acknowledge the hurt caused by the R-word and to be respectful in the words and actions taken towards people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Also, tomorrow is Rainbow Day. Wear any or all the colors of the rainbow to support inclusion for all! 

Cycling club is going on their Gorgeous Spring Ride today directly after school. Anyone is welcome to come! it will be a short ride touring the wooded roads that will be manageable to all ability levels! If you are interested and don’t have a bike email Mrs. Schran and we’ll try to accommodate you. Come by room 412 on wednesday right after school and enjoy the beautiful weather!

The Talawanda wrestling team placed fifth at their sectional tournament this past weekend. The team went 9 and 0 in their finals matches and has five district alternates as well as 4 district qualifiers. Sammy Dillon, Davis Williams, Logan Crauder, James Beckett, and Julian Askren all finished fifth in the tournament. Colton Baker, Nick Englehard, and Nathon Detherage all placed 3rd. Senior Terell Wills won the tournament, finishing in first place with a pin over the 17th ranked 220 lbs. Wrestler in the state. The team travels to Kettering Fairmont this upcoming weekend to compete in the district round of the division 1 individual state tournament.

They will receive their award May 1st at Ohio FFA State Convention. Also recent graduates Matthew Butterfield, Colleen Minges, and Dakota Kiefer will be earning their American FFA Degree, which is the highest degree awarded in the FFA program. Go Aggies!

The FCCLA chapter had a successful weekend- they brought home 5 Gold, 5 Silver and 1 Bronze ratings and we will have to wait till March 16th to find out who goes to state!

The destination imagination tournament was this past weekend. One high school team qualified for the state tournament on April 4th, wish them luck.

The hockey team wrapped up their season last saturday in a 6-0 loss to the 2nd State ranked Upper Arlington Golden Bears.  The Brave finish the season with a 31-8-2 record, the most wins in program history and their first league championship in 11 years.  Thanks to all 5 seniors on the team and the Brave will be back next year.  There is a meeting tomorrow during tutorial in Coach Tincher’s room for any hockey players in the building.

Good Morning Talawanda. Today is Friday, February 28th, 2020.

Next week, Best Buddies is hosting a spirit week for Spread The Word: Inclusion Week. Monday, students should wear green to support mental health awareness. Tuesday is cam day, Wednesday is jersey day, Thursday is rainbow day, and Friday is school spirit/Best Buddies day!

Seniors – The local scholarship applications, both The Talawanda and the Oxford Community Foundation,  are due this Friday by the end of the day.  See Mrs. Roy with any questions and to get a copy of your transcript.

Juniors! Do you want to have a prom at all? If so, you need to sign up for prom committee. Applications are outside Ms. Mann’s door room 319. The prom is scheduled for May 2, which is just 9 weeks from this Saturday.

Once again if you would like to ride the bus to the Ice Haus in Columbus on Saturday to watch the hockey team’s third round matchup with Upper Arlington, sign up in the athletic office, the cost is $7.

Congrats to Gage Feix who bowled a 695 series last night, good enough to qualify him for the State bowling meet next week, also congrats to the rest of the bowling team who concluded a great season last night.

Home Games for this weekend: none, but good luck to the wrestling team who will head to sectionals tomorrow and the hockey team who will head to Ice Haus to face Upper Arlington tomorrow.

The NHS Charity Volleyball Tournament will be held in the THS gym this Friday, February 28 at 7:00 pm.  Form a team of 6 and sign up  in Ms. Alfonsi’s room, 315, by Thursday to play in the tournament.  Cost to play is $5.00 per player.  Spectator admission to the event is free.

This week is national FFA week. Here at THS our FFA chapter ranges from 130-160 FFA members per year being the largest organization in our school. Our members are involved in all areas of the building of best buddies, FCCLA, Student body officers to nearly every sports team! In order to be in FFA you must also be enrolled in an Agricultural education class. This is a great way to get involved in your school and community while gaining leadership skills and building relationships.

The wrestling team competed at the SWOC Championship this past weekend at Ross High School.  Six Talawanda wrestlers made it to the podium at the tournament: Nick Englehard placed 4th in the 138 lbs. weight class, Sammy Dillon placed 3rd in the 126 lbs. weight class, Julian Askren placed 3rd in the 182 lbs. weight class, and Nathon Detherage placed 2nd in the 285 lbs. weight class.  Two wrestlers brought home the gold at conference:  Colton Baker placed 1st in the 106 lbs. division and Terell WIlls placed 1st in the 220 lbs. weight class.  This weekend the team travels to Lakota East to compete in the sectional round of the individual state tournament. 

Congrats to Sam Hool who this weekend placed 6th at the division 1 OHSAA diving championships in Canton over the weekend, he caps off a marvelous season for himself and the swim and dive teams so congrats to all of them.

The boys basketball team fell to Princeton in the first round of the state playoffs by a 75-44 score, Dalton Norris had 3 points and Jonathan Richter had 12. The boys finish with a 6-17 record, congrats to them on a great season.

The hockey team picked up 2 wins the opening weekend of the state tournament first over Springboro by a 5-3 score, then over Thomas Worthington by a 5-2 score, Daniel Emenaker picked up his first 2 career playoff wins and Parker Geshan had a hat trick against Thomas Worthington. The hockey team achieves their first 30 win season in school history and will continue with a tall task as they will face undefeated Upper Arlington in the next round on Saturday.

Good Morning Talawanda. Today is Thursday, February 20th, 2020.

Attention NHS members:  We will meet in the cafeteria today after school. Also, pick up NHS shirt order forms in Ms. Alfonsi’s classroom.

Students who want to travel with Ms Mann and Mr Tincher in 2021 should attend an information meeting today at 7:00 pm right after parent/teacher conferences in room 319.

Juniors who want to be on prom steering committee should pick up an application outside Ms. Mann’s room 319.

All students planning on attending baseball tryouts next week need to fill out the Google Classroom form. See Coach Lykins for the login code. Also, parent letters and final forms need to be completed and submitted before you may try out. See Coach Lykins if you missed last night’s parent meeting.

The HS School Counseling Department will be hosting a Scholarship Review event today from 5:30-6:30 PM in the HS Media Center. This event is for seniors and their families (or juniors and their families wanting to get a preview of the local scholarship process) who are interested in a review of the THS Local and OCF Scholarship Booklets. There will be a brief overview of the current scholarships available and the application criteria followed by a work session for anyone needing assistance completing their scholarship applications. The THS School Counselors will be on hand to answer questions about the process and requirements.

Tons of athletes up for athlete of the week this week you can vote for them on the Cincinnati Enquirer’s high school sports page, Dale Yauger is up for the boys basketball team, Sam Hool is up for the swim and dive team, Jack Tincher is up for the hockey team and the hockey team is also up for Cincinnati team of the week as well. Once again, you can vote for all of them on the Cincinnati Enquirer’s high school sports page.

The Ac Chal team fell in 2 exhibitions last night to Walnut Hills, they finished with a 14-0 regular match record, and were league champs, Jasper Ralinovsky received the sportsmanship award, other honors for the Brave included Shr-Hua Moore being named to the all conference first team, Paul Bolenbaugh was named second team, and Jens Bartel was third team.

Also congrats to the boys bowling team who qualified themselves last night for the district bowling tournament.
