Good morning, Talawanda! Today is Friday September 7th, 2018

Talawanda’s new Larping club is a Medieval combat and role playing group.  This group is all about small team deathmatch battles and capture the flag battles.  Once they start getting more players they will start doing large scale battles.  They use foam swords that are checked for safety before every battle.  1 on 1 battles, or ‘sparring’, will happen too.  If you would like to join please email daniel.ross@talawanda.org.  If you would like to see what this club is about they hold meetings on Wednesdays until 3:30.  To be able to play and fight they require a signed liability waiver.  They gather in Mrs. Bakers room, 410.

Any 9-12th grader who has completed an act of volunteerism and would like to be considered for a thousand dollar cash prize is encouraged to apply for the Prudential Spirit of Community Award.  The application can be found at spirit.prudential.com and is due by November 6th.  Talawanda will have one local winner who will be considered for the state award, and a trip for themselves and a parent or guardian to Washington, DC this spring for a 4-day recognition ceremony.

Best Buddies or anyone who would like to still join:  Please remember to submit your online application ASAP.  If you need directions for signing up, please see Mrs. Sammons in Room 316.  Our match party is this coming Tuesday, September 11.  We will have pizza and snacks!

And now for world news and Patty G with sports.

The  boys soccer team put up double digits last night in their home win over Mt. Healthy. The 10-0 victory puts the Braves at 3-0-0 in the SWOC and 5-0-0 overall.  Ben Marks had the shutout in net. Tristian Fontaine, Luke Eiche, Nate Wheelright, Andy June, Jasper Ralinovsky, Quinn Flahspohler, and Ethan Kent all found the back of the net.

The Braves boys golfers brought home another pair of wins on Thursday, with varsity defeating Edgewood 167-216 in a round punctuated by twin scores of 39 by co-medalists Trey Hubbard and Charlie Faler. The Varsity is now 8 and 0 and 6 and 0 in the SWOC. The JV team was handed a forfeit by Edgewood, who was unable to field a team— so their record is now 7 and 1 overall, 6 and 0 in the SWOC.

The girls soccer team also beat Mount Healthy by a healthy  margin of 7 to nothing for their first league win of the year.  They’re 2-2–1 overall and 1-2-0 in the conference.

Home games for today:   Boys Varsity Football takes on Eaton at the Field at 7. The Eagles have been outscored by their opponents  102 to 7 through 2 games this season. They are coming off a 62-0 loss at St. Henry last week. Tailgating begins at 5, the game at 7. It is an American out.

And you saw yesterday that the Stanley Cup came to Oxford this week. Former Miami Assistant Coach Mitch Korn and former radio announcer John Walton brought the cup to Oxford on their day with it Wednesday. Walton actually grew up in Oxford and went to Badin High School. He’s a 1996 Miami Graduate who has an interesting story of how he got to the NHL. I sat down with him to talk about the Caps Stanley Cup run and his career on Wednesday.

Now John’s voice was the soundtrack for basically all of Washington, DC during the Stanley Cup run. I’d actually known him before, i had the chance to shadow John in the Capitals radio booth when they came to Columbus to play the Blue Jackets in February. I’ll admit it was a little nerve-wracking to sit next to one of my idols and interview them, but it was pretty cool. Walton and the Caps begin the season against the Boston Bruins and raise their Stanley Cup Banner on October 3rd.

And that’s our broadcast on this Friday. I’m Patrick Geshan. Thanks so much for watching, and have a wonderful weekend.
